Thank you Alastair, yes we are really excited about this partnership and the potential for collecting new stories and perspectives.

The CoCoCo collection software will have interfaces in German and in English. At the moment the cataloguing will be in the language of the submission as long as this is in German or English. Potentially we will translate the title of submissions. The browse metadata (from closed vocabularies) will also be translated. The metadata will be displayed through the Europeana digital portal. It should be presented in The German digital library when that is developed. We've not set this up yet, but it will also be fed into The Great War Archive.

For on-the-fly translation of user generated metadata, descriptions etc I am intrigued by recent discussion on JISCmail lists about using Google-translate on cultural websites...

For the understanding by both nations of some of the stories Europeana plans online exhibitions, and we have the open source Path Creation Scheme software if we have funds to implement this. Initially we're concentrating on the partnership, on the collection, and on basic cataloguing - which feels like enough in 5 months!
